South-central Alaska – North Gulf Coast
Beautiful and abounding with sea life, enjoyed by kayakers and anglers alike the North Gulf Coast is a popular destination for cruise ships, Kenai Fjord’s Glacier Tours, and even the Seward Mt. Marathon Race held every 4th of July – a 1 ½ mile course straight up the side of the mountain!
2005 marked the 50th Anniversary of the Seward Silver Salmon Derby, which is held the last half of August. Here you will also find the Alaska Sea Life Center open year round, plentiful choices in accommodations and restaurants, gift shops, and other services. Seward is reached by Seward Highway, south from Anchorage with breathtaking scenery winding through mountain passes, along rivers, streams, and lakes, or by train with the Alaska Railroad.
You can fish here for Halibut, Salmon, Rainbow/steelhead trout, Arctic char/Dolly Varden, Arctic grayling, and Lake trout. Charter boats can take you out into Resurrection Bay, and there are plentiful opportunities to fish the local lakes and rivers.
There is also a special Youth Only Fishery – First Lake, located in Seward where only anglers under the age of 16 are permitted to fish for four consecutive days beginning on the third Thursday in May.
You can also visit Exit Glacier, part of the Harding Ice Field where you can walk along a paved path and see the glacier up close; there is hiking in backwoods of the Chugach National Forest, and of course plenty of camping options.
Seward is a destination for the whole family to enjoy and experience all the sea has to offer. With a population of around 4,000 and a mild average temperature in the mid-50°, it’s best to dress in layers to accommodate every member of the family.
